Friday May 15, 2009 is Louisville’s Bike to Work Day

Louisville’s Bike to Work Day is Friday, May 15th. It is an easy way to join in with other cyclists as they commute into downtown or other destinations. City officials would like to measure how many people are commuting by bike that day, so sign up to be counted! If you need bike routes, you can access the City’s bike maps as pdf’s. Louisville bike safety classes can be found at Bicycling for Louisville’s website. And if you think you’ve got a list of excuses, here is a place to find solutions. Here is our list of why we see cycling as important to our practice, our sustainability, and our future.

Bike Summit

The Louisville Bike Summit II happened last week. It is a part of a process to see the city move to the next level of becoming a Bicycle Friendly City. The event focused on the 5 E’s: Engineering, Education, Encouragement, Enforcement and Evaluation. In light of the current economic downturn, it is even more important to focus on creative ways to see biking become more safe and prevalent in our city. Downtown Bike Racks

The Louisville Downtown Management District embarked in 2002 to issue artistic bike racks around the downtown. It raises the awareness of the arts, funds artists in the city, and supplies needed bike racks to the urban core. The LDMD just finished another round of art bike rack submittals. To see the current bike racks, go to Louisville Downtown Management District website. The map in the center shows where the bike racks are located. By clicking on the surround pictures, one can see an enlarged photo of the bike racks. Below is a bike rack design submitted by Verdant Design which references Brad White’s bike rack.

Cycling to meetings

We take sustainability seriously. Whenever possible, we will commute by bike to meetings for instance. Why? Because for short trips, it can’t be beat:

It conserves gasoline

It doesn’t decrease air quality like cars do

It doesn’t require a 9′x18′ parking space or the expense of parking

No time is needed to get to the car or to find a parking space at the destination

Best of all for clients, the Feds don’t have a mileage rate for bikes, so there is no expense to the client!

When longer trips require more time, we use an efficient, 4-cylinder car. So for your short trips, have you considered biking or walking rather than driving?

Park(ing) Day 2007

Park(ing) Day is a day to emphasize the need for public open spaces, especially in urban areas. The basic idea is to “rent” a spot — a parking space — to create a temporary “park”. Sometimes the parks are literal (grass and trees), sometimes they are more for the fun of it. More information can be found at Trust for Public Land.
