simple concepts that better the environment

Sketches

Sketches tell a great deal about the thought process and intent before it becomes a polished final design.

Cycling to meetings

We take sustainability seriously.  Whenever possible, we will commute by bike to meetings for instance.  Why?  Because for short trips, it can’t be beat:

  • It conserves gas
  • It doesn’t decrease air quality
  • It doesn’t require a 9′x18′ parking space or the expense of parking
  • No time is needed to get to the car or to find a parking space at the destination
  • Best of all for clients, the Feds don’t have a mileage rate for bikes, so there is no expense to the client!

When longer trips require more time, we use an efficient, 4-cylinder car. So for your short trips, have you considered biking or walking rather than driving?

    Lobelia

    Lobelia cardinalis

    Lobelia cardinalis

The Cardinal Flower — Lobelia cardinalis is in full bloom. Unfortunately, the hummingbird that was flying around didn’t want its photo taken. I would estimate that this is about 70 plants of Cardinal Flower and it has a dramatic effect. Typically it blooms a few flowers on the stalk at a time from the end of July through September, so planting it in a mass is a great way to to get a larger color effect. This is the view out my window, what’s your view?

    Highland Baptist Church Master Plan

Work on the Highland Baptist Church Master Plan was a challenge in coreographing the history and sacred spaces in a meaningful way for the 21st century. The spaces shown are conceptual, since they will develop as small projects over time, yet they need to make sense collectively. The best way to explain the new grounds were to take viewers on a walk, so a 3D movie of the proposed changes proved to be the best choice to show the proposed changes.

    Park(ing) Day 2007

Park(ing) Day is a day to emphasize the need for public open spaces, especially in urban areas. The basic idea is to “rent” a spot — a parking space — to create a temporary “park”. Sometimes the parks are literal (grass and trees), sometimes they are more for the fun of it. More information can be found at Trust for Public Land. Check out what the Kentucky Chapter of Landscape Architects did last year for Park(ing) Day:

    Rainy view

    Cardinal Flower

    Cardinal Flower

The view from the window is a rainy one today. The cardinal flower plants are just entering their prime with the younger plants not even starting to bloom. The plants like being wet, but in soils that do drain. These are located in a portion of the side yard rain garden. More on that later.
